Nihal German University in Sudan

Structure: Faculties & Departments

The structuring of the faculties and departments would follow the German model thereof.

Currently Approved Faculties

Currently, the following faculties have been approved by the Sudanese Ministry for the institutes of higher education:

  • Media Studies
  • Literature and Linguistics of the following languages:
    • German
    • French
    • English
    • Arabic
    • Italian
    • Chinese (business)
  • Translation Studies
  • Economics

The First Phase of Planning

For the initial phase, the following faculties and departments are being planned:

  • Humanities Faculty
    • Department of Literary Studies and Linguistics
  • Technical Faculty
    • Department of Agricultural Studies
    • Department of Environmental Engineering
    • Department of Media Studies and Communication Design
    • Department of Informatics
  • Economic-Sociological Faculty
    • Department of Economics

To co-ordinate with the Bologna criteria, Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees should be offered and awarded. The appropriate subjects from German institutes of higher education (“Hoch- and Fachhochschulen”: universities and polytechnics) should serve as a basis of the course of studies and examination regulations.

In the field of research, research centres may be established, both in the respective faculties but also on interdisciplinary levels. They may be approved for a period of three to five years and may be prolonged in the case of extraordinary research results. They should be organised either within a faculty or interdisciplinary.

Middle-term planning

There are also plans for the addition of further faculties and departments in later phases. An internal structuring in faculties and departments could look as follows:

  • Humanities Faculty
    • Department of Literary Studies and Linguistics
    • Department of History and Archeology
    • Department of Ethnology and Cultural Sciences
  • Natural Scientific Faculty
    • Department of Physics
    • Department of Chemistry
    • Department of Biology
  • Medical Faculty
    • Deparment of Human Medicine
    • Deparment of Dentistry and Dental Technology
    • Deparment of Pharmacy
  • Technical Faculty
    • Department of Engineering Sciences
    • Department of Agricultural Sciences
    • Department of Environmental Engineering
    • Department of Tourism and Hotel Industry
    • Department of Media Studies and Communication Design
    • Department of Informatics
  • Economic-Sociological Faculty
    • Deparment of Economics
    • Department of Social Sciences
    • Department of Political and Administrative Sciences
  • Arts Faculty
    • Department of Visual Arts
    • Department of Music
    • Department of Sports and Artistry

If the university is successfully established in the region of Khartum, we will also attempt to establish branch campuses in the mid-term, to be based on practical oriented degree programs. This would serve the interest of a higher education system throughout the country, including structurally weak regions (especially South Sudan and Darfur).

Additional Institutes

Beyond the faculty level, other institutes are being planned, which will offer courses for students of all faculties: a Language Institute, a “Coaching Academy” and an Institute for Teacher Training.

  • The Language Institute should provide courses for practical language learning. Both courses in the various languages – the ones mentioned above – should be offered, but also special courses related to specific fields, for example the sciences or economics. Also, the general language education, necessary for learning another European language, should take place here.
  • The “coaching academy” is planned to offer students further vocational qualifications, for example in the fields of project management, business start-up, computer skills etc. Employing teachers from outside the university should guarantee the practical orientation of the courses offered by this institute.
  • The Nihal German University in Sudan sees as one of its duties, especially in the interest of actively promoting the general level of education, to train qualified teachers for schools and language schools in Sudan. The Institute for Teacher Training is planned to coordinate the training of teachers and to offer the necessary auxiliary qualifications, especially within the educational range. The training of teachers is at the beginning focused in the area of linguistics including Arabic for foreigners.
